Warm memories and recipes with Glade®

It’s fall and that means cooler weather, warm cookies and holiday traditions. This time of year puts me in a great mood, it reminds me of all the great times I had with my grandma! I remember when my abuela cooked my brother and I various treats this time of year. The scents of cinnamon,vanilla and sugary sweets filled the air in my household, it was 20 degrees outside and we would cuddle by the fire. Earlier this week I headed out to Kroger and spotted the Glade® Winter Collection display, which threw me right into the holiday spirit.

I had cookies and pie on the mind the entire week, so I picked up a Glade® Frosted Cookie Party™ candle and aerosol spray plus the Apple Cinnamon Cheer™ candle which was divine. Since we are on the topic of the holidays I wanted to share these amazing recipes my grandmother shared with me. It’s her Creamy Hot chocolate and sugar cookies which go hand in hand with these lowering temperatures.

Abuelitas Creamy Hot Coco!

INGREDIENTS

4 cups whole milk or coconut milk
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 (3.5-ounce) dark chocolate bars
1/3 cup honey
2 teaspoons vanilla
heavy pinch of sea salt or salt
Whipped cream can

DIRECTIONS: All you need is this!

Heat 3 1/2 cups of milk over medium heat until the milk begins to bubble around the edges. While the milk is sitting in the pan, whisk the 1/2 cup of milk with the cornstarch. Mix well, set it to the side.

Make sure to chop the chocolate bars into chunks.

When the milk starts to bubble a bit around the edges add the chocolate, honey, vanilla and the salt.

Mix in the cornstarch mixture.

Let the hot chocolate come to a bubble, siring occasionally.

It should take about 5 minutes. The mixture will thicken, let cool slightly, and ladle into mugs.

Top with whipped cream and nutmeg if desired.

My second recipe I wanted to share that is super quick and easy is the sugar cookie recipe my mother would always make for my brother and I around this time of year.

Easy Sugar Cookies

INGREDIENTS

2 Cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:

In large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Make sure to beat the mixture on a steady pace, add the flour slowly until combined. Divide the dough in half and flatten into discs. I suggest wrapping them in plastic and freeze for 20-30 mins.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment. Remove one dough disk; let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Roll out 1/8 inch thick between two sheets of floured parchment, dusting dough with flour as needed. you can cut them into shapes or just make them circular. Set on to baking sheet and bake, moving them a bit half way through until edges are golden.

Tips: I also made a different batch that included chocolate ones, just had cocoa powder into the mix in the start. I also learned if you don’t have all the tools for making circular disc shapes just improvise, I couldn’t find my cookie cutter so I used the top of a Parmesan cheese cover to make them. It was a life saver and a good way to save money! It’s funny how a scent like the Glade® Apple Cinnamon Cheer™ candle and the Glade® Frosted Cookie Party™ spray sparks a flood of memories. I truly believe that scents are connected to our everyday life and a specific smell can trigger memories from the past.
