My whole family enjoys hot sauce, I don’t know if it’s because we are Latin or because for part of our lives we grew up in the south. But hot sauce is a must have in our home. From breakfast foods to dinner foods, either we put some hot sauce or some sort of hot pepper in our food to give it a bit of a kick! Whenever I am trying to enhance the flavor of a dish I always reach for something spicy, so when I was asked to take a look at the El Yucateco sauces I was thrilled. I went to walmart to buy a few bottles of the hot sauce and was surprised when there was a so many to choose from. They were so affordable as well, which is a plus because this day and age it’s always nice to save a buck or two.
There are 4 products available at Walmart:
1. Red Habanero Sauce
2. Green Habanero Sauce
3. XXXtra Hot Kutbil-ik Sauce
4. Black Label Reserve (Exclusively at Walmart)
I decided to make a dish that my mom has been making for a while now, it’s a Cajun Shrimp Scampi with a side of collard greens.
I started by using the El Yucateco to marinate the shrimp for a while before combining them with all the other ingredients.
I’m so glad I did that because it gave my Shrimp Scampi a kick it needed and so much flavor, I used the Black Label reserve Chile Habanero flavor. The Black Label Reserve which is exclusively available at Walmart is the newest addition to the El Yucateco hot sauce line. Is a combination of sweet, savory and smoky with a moderate amount of spice. I added a bit of it to my collard greens as well to give it a southern flavor. The collard greens are really easy to make, get yourself three bunches of Collard greens. Wash them very well, put a pot of water to boil. Add the collard’s in after you chop them down a bit, add some smoked turkey to it too. Wait till the water gets low then add some to pepper/salt to taste and a few dashes of El Yucateco hot sauce. Viola!
I really loved the flavor it gave the Shrimp Scampi and collard greens. It really enhanced the flavor of the dishes, here is the recipe I used to make the Scampi!
- 1 lb shrimp (shelled and deveined)
- 2 tbsps olive oil
- 4 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp parsley flakes (dried)
- 1 tbsp italian salad dressing
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 dash crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 dash ground black pepper
- 1 lb dry pasta (angel hair, spaghetti or fettuccine work great)
- 1 cup half & half (or heavy cream)
- 1tbsp of Black Label reserve El Yucateco
- 2 tbsps butter
- 1 cup parmesan cheese
- Marinate the shrimp in the other ingredients until you are ready for them. Thirty minutes before you are ready to serve, start heating the pasta water and place the half-and-half and butter in a large serving bowl to soften (sometimes I nuke it in the microwave for a minute or two).
- Put a large skillet over high (or medium high) heat to get it really hot.
- When the pasta is about three minutes away from being done (done=al dente), dump the shrimp and marinade into the hot skillet.
- Toss the shrimp around as they cook.Once the shrimp are pink and curled-up (about three minutes), remove the skillet from the heat. Drain the pasta and dump it into the serving bowl with the half-and-half and butter.
- Add the Parmesan cheese, a pinch of salt and a few grinds of black pepper and toss together gently (the residual heat from the pasta melts everything together).
- Pour the shrimp and sauce over the top and serve immediately.
