Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have started a Twitter trend we can definitely get behind. The two former Disney stars have both developed more womanly bodies in the past year, leading to the inevitable Internet sniping about their weight. But instead of getting upset, the two teens have joined forces to defend curvy women everywhere.
Cyrus, 18, got the ball rolling on Friday, when — after apparently being criticized for her weight — she tweeted a pic of a frighteningly anorexic woman to her 3.5 million followers.
“By calling girls like me fat this is what you’re doing to other people,” wrote the So Undercover star beneath the photo. “I love MYSELF & if you could say the same you wouldn’t be sitting on your computer trying to hurt others.”
Cyrus followed the comment by posting an image of Marilyn Monroe with the caption: “Proof that you can be adored by thousands of men, even when your thighs touch.”
Lovato, 19, re-tweeted the Marilyn photograph to her own 4.9 million followers. She added an “AMEN!!!!” — prompting some reciprocal love from her former Disney Channel cohort.
“AMEN! I will destroy any one that ever calls you the F word,” Miley tweeted back at Demi. “You have the SEXIIIESTTTT curvyyyy body! I LOVE IT! #werkthosecurves.”
“God I love you. SO DO YOU! Lovato wrote back. “And whoever called you that has it coming. Miss you more than ever. ps SO proud of you for posting that! #curvesareBEAUTIFUL.”
Since returning from rehab earlier this year, Lovato has been candid about her struggle with eating disorders. Unfortunately, she’s still had to defend the changes to her body against anonymous internet bashers.
“Guess what, I’m healthy and happy, and if you’re hating on my weight you obviously aren’t,” she tweeted to a Twitter critic following the MTV Video Music Awards in late August.
We wonder if Lovato — who, not for nothing, looked like a young Jennifer Lopez at last week’s Latin Grammys — gave Cyrus the courage to stand up to her haters instead of being quietly shamed by them (or agreeing with them, as Rihanna did when a fan called her fat in September).
It must be maddening to be a celebrity whose body is constantly under scrutiny, but Lovato and Cyrus are showing that the criticism can be turned around, inspiring a more honest dialogue about weight and body image. Or as Cyrus tweeted on Saturday: “I don’t wanna be shaped like a girl I LOVE being shaped like a WOMAN.”
“And trust me ladies,” she added with a wink, “your man wont mind either.”
