Traveling long distances can be uncomfortable for anyone and especially for our pets. I have been on countless road trips with my dog Snoopy and he is always running around the car and acting a bit restless. We usually have him on the back seat with his doggy seat belt, yes Doggy seat belt haha but my family and I decided that a bigger car is what we actually need. A car that is reliable and roomy, like the Kia. I am driving a small Saturn at the moment and looking for a mid-size vehicle.
I am obsessed with the Kia Sorento it has 6 seats and three of them fold how awesome is that!? The space in the car is what I need for my family for 3 including my dog snoopy, this car would have been great when I traveled to Texas from Florida last year.
I have had my eye on a car like the Kia for a long time and I think it’s time for it since I have my dog, and even though he is a small dog he acts like a big one! and he needs all the space he can get.
Traveling with your dogs can be hard, so I wanted to share a few tips with you to make them comfortable.
First Make a List of the things you need to bring!
- Water
- Dog Treats and Food
- Dishes for food and water
- Leash and Collar
- Pet Beds
If you are going on a long trip make sure to bring your dogs medical papers and kennel. You have to make your car comfortable for your dogs, I suggest bringing a favorite toy or blanket they make like. I found that useful for my dog and very comforting for him. If you plan on staying in a hotel make sure to find ones that are pet friendly.
I implore you to not let your dog stick his head outside, debris outside can get in his sensitive eyes, nose or ears and cause alot of damage. Just like humans dog’s need seat belts, you can find them at any pet store for less than $10 dollars. But please make sure your dogs leash is still on while the safety restraint is on. I can’t tell you how many times I had to chase my dog because he jumped out the window or ran from the car seat. He is a small dog (Bichon Frise) and some cars can’t see them, so please be careful when you’re traveling with your four legged friend.
Just like people dogs get car sick too: If your pet is prone to car sickness, give him a light meal a few hours before you leave and feed him minimally during the drive. Offer him small amounts of water periodically in the hours before the trip. I found that giving my dog some ice chips kept him busy for a few and hydrated.
Just remember to have a safe trip with your four legged friend!
