I have noticed a huge trend when it comes to Fashion magazines and it’s called “Hiding Curves”. What do I mean? Well recently Elle Australia published a piece about Rebel Wilson. The comedienne is on the cover of Elle Australia’s April issue wearing a hot pink Marina Rinaldi coat layered over a Peter Pan collared shirt with pearl embellishments by Roaman. Which she looks drop dead gorgeous in but something didn’t sit right with me. She was given the “Plus size cover treatment” which means, if the model isn’t super thin they don’t show her body in the cover and sometimes in the spread.
I’ve noticed Elle,Vogue,Glamour and so many more hide the curves of some of the stars they have on the cover. Like Adele,Octavia spector, Gabourey Sidile,Mindy Kaling, Melissa McCartney and more. One would think all these media outlets would celebrate the fact that these women have made it without being what society says they should be.
They put huge jackets on their curves to hide them, It was reported that Melissa McCartney did choose this jacket for the cover because she felt like it suited her. The jackets in both photos cover almost every ounce of flesh on these women, I understand in these kind of magazines the focus is on the clothing but there is some attention on the star I mean they are on the cover.
Rebel’s curves are completely covered in this coat, it’s like the stylists at these fashion shoots don’t know how to dress plus women so they just drape something huge over them; Or they make sure they are off centered and angled in way to make them look thinner. This isn’t the first time a high fashion magazine has covered Wilson’s curves, Glamour Uk has done the very same.
She was covered up with bubbles, yes she looked stunning but why can’t plus size cover models be treated the same way as any other straight sized model on covers?
They did the very same to Gabourey Sidibe, not only did they cover her body but lighten her gorgeous skin. How far will these magazines go to cover up natural beauty?!
Vogue did the same when Lena Dunham graced the cover, she is a size 8.
Mindy Kaling was also cropped and photoshopped for the fourth Annual Women in TV issue for Elle. She appeared on one of the four covers along with Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams.
But the other ladies were pictured at the typical 3/4 fashion, while kaling was cropped at the chest. Mindy is a size 8 which is smaller than the average american woman who is a size 12-14. I mean the cover is gorgeous and definitely stands out, but what is happening that we need to hide the figure of a curvy woman, what is that telling our young girls? That even the magazines they read, they are not truly accepted?
Adele,Octavia spector,Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling and more are subjected to blatant fat shaming from these fashion magazines. That offer no explanation for printing women larger than a size 6 in above the neck positions and wearing large jackets to cover their curves.
I googled “Fashion magazine Covers 2015″ and got this, most models are shown and very few have only head shots.
I can keep listing so many fashion magazines that are fat shaming their cover star’s, it’s funny because the consumers of the magazines are the average american woman. Wouldn’t you want your cover stars representing your consumers as well? When I see stars who are my size I jump to buy the magazine, Take note Elle,Vogue and similar mags.
My Name is Violet i am a Fashion/Beauty Blogger I’ve blogged for more than 3years. I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York,i have spent 15 years in South Beach,Florida. I started blogging about Fashion and Beauty, plus events i attend frequently around the USA. As a Plus size or Curvy girl its hard to find nice clothing on a budget. Well at least that’s the case for myself. I Only shop in the clearance rack or when there is a sale i cannot pass up. It is possible to shop for fashionable clothing on a budget. And i’m here to help and give tips on how to achieve this. I want to show that you can still be a Fierce and Fabulous Curvy Gal on a thrift store budget.

This was a great read! You opened my eyes up to these magazines because I never really paid attention but now I’m aware of this “hiding curves” trend, I hope independent magazines for plus women continuously show our full bodies though.

OMG Mindy’s cover is so stunning it bought a tear to my eye. I tell you no lie. I think its horrible the way the fashion industry treats its plus sized cover women and I wouldn’t say its a new trend. It’s been happening for a long time. All women of all sizes and shades (as there is a lack of black and brown girls on covers as well) should be celebrated. #BLMGirls

Crazy! I haven’t paid attention to the pile of magazines on my rack in a long time so I hadn’t noticed this trend. If a woman is a cover girl, let her be the cover girl – curves and all. #blmgirl
